SASSA Old Age Grant or Old Age Pension is a social welfare program designed to provide financial support for older people in South Africa. This program provides financial assistance to senior citizens aged 60 years and above who are unable to work and have no source of employment.  This grant is administered by Sasa and is specifically designed for South African citizens, resident refugees, and asylum seekers.

This program provides financial assistance to poor senior citizens after meeting the eligibility criteria. A registration and eligibility procedure has been specified in this program. How Much Assistance Is Given From Old Age Pension

Now let’s tell you how much old age pension is provided to you by SASSA when you are registered. 2080 is funded by SAssa Old Age. If your age is more than 75 years then you are given financial assistance of 21000 this amount is given to you every month after verification.

Procedure to Apply for the SASSA Old Age Grant

You can register for Sasa Old Age Grant at your nearest Sasa office. If you are not able to walk, you can also send a friend or trusted relative to get your registration done. This requires your doctor’s signature and a necessary letter explaining why you cannot go to the office. SASA registration forms are available at the nearest SASA office. You or any of your relatives can submit this application.

  A representative will be present to guide you in making this application. After filling out the application form, submit it to the SASA office and obtain a receipt. A receipt must be obtained as it will contain your application ID and proof of registration. Once your verification is complete, you will be notified through a return letter, even if you qualify, a return letter will be sent to you.

 Even if you are not eligible, you will be sent a return letter. If you are unhappy with SASA’s decision, you can also file a reconsideration application. Sassa gives you the right to do this. Apart from this, you can also register online, using the method we will tell you below.

Sassa Old Age Grant Online Application

If you are not able to walk or there is no SASA office near you, then you need not worry because the government has created a website where you can register online. The online registration process is straightforward, just follow the steps given below:

  • First of all, you have to visit the Sassa SRD website.
  • There you have to enter your ID card and mobile number and then press the send pin button.
  • You will get a six-digit OTP on the mobile number, you have to enter it on the website and verify it.
  • After that, the terms and conditions page will open for you. You have to read all the terms and conditions carefully and if you agree then you have to click on the agree to terms and conditions button.
  • Your personal details page will open in front of you, and you will have to enter your details like your name, surname, ID card, mobile number, complete address, etc.
  • After that, you will be presented with the option of banking details, for which you have to select the method of receiving money.
  • If you want to get money through the bank then you have to add your bank details.
  • After that, the application form has to be submitted. You will receive a message on your mobile number containing the confirmation of your application and the application ID.
  • You have to wait for 30 days for your application to be verified. After that, you can check your application status.

Qualification Requirments

Eligibility criteria have also been established for registration and eligibility for the Sassa Old Age Grant. Only those who meet the eligibility criteria will be registered and given financial assistance. The eligibility criteria are listed below.

  • You should be at least 60 years of age or above.
  • You have not received any government assistance or assistance from UIF before.
  • You are not receiving care services in a government agency or shelter.
  • Be a permanent resident or asylum seeker in South Africa.
  • Applicant and spouse will be required to take the mean test.
  • The applicant should have his 13 Hans bar code or identity card with him.

Required Documents

To apply for SASA Old Age you also need some documents which help you verify and know your eligibility these documents are listed below.

  • You must have your barcoded ID card with you.
  • Suppose you do not have an ID card. In that case, you need to bring an affidavit signed by a person of solid reputation such as a counselor, social worker, traditional leader, religious minister, or school principal, confirming your name and eligibility.
  • If you are married, proof of your marital status
  • Proof of your financial assets
  • Your bank statement for the last three months
  • If your spouse is deceased, his/her death certificate
  • If you are Divorce then you must have Divorce Certificate
  • Proof of your current address
  • Proof of monthly income and pension etc

What is the Mean Test?

To be eligible for the Sasa Old Age Grant you have to take the mean test. The mean test is conducted to assess the financial status of the applicant including the income statement and other factors to ascertain whether the applicant is financially poor or not. A mean test is conducted to get all this information. In the mean test, your eligibility criteria will be determined by looking at your and your spouse’s financial expenses, assets, and many other things.

 The asset limit as per the new update is as follows:

Limitation of assets:
  • An individual should not have assets worth more than R1 372 800 ie, your property, your car, etc.
  • A married person’s joint assets with their spouse are worth R2 745 600. You do not have assets worth more than that.
Income limit
  • The applicant does not earn more than R96 840 in a year
  • However, if the applicant is married, the combined income of the applicant and his/her spouse must not exceed R193,680 per annum.

This mean Test Criteria is only for Old Age Grant, mean Test Criteria for any other Grant may be different.
